Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells, leading to the formation of pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads. Acne typically appears on the face, neck, chest, and back, but can occur anywhere on the body.

The exact cause of acne is not known, but it is thought to be related to a combination of factors, including hormonal changes, genetics, and certain medications. Hormones such as androgens stimulate the production of oil in the skin, leading to clogged pores.

Treatment for acne may depend on the severity of the condition. Mild cases may be treated with over-the-counter topical creams and gels containing benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or alpha-hydroxy acids. Moderate to severe cases may require prescription medications, such as topical or oral antibiotics, retinoids, or hormonal therapy.

In addition to medical treatments, there are lifestyle changes that may help improve acne, such as washing the affected areas twice a day with a gentle cleanser, avoiding picking or squeezing pimples, and avoiding touching the face with dirty hands. A dermatologist can help determine the best treatment options for an individual's specific type and severity of acne.
