Overview

BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor) is a gene that codes for a protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor. BDNF is a member of the neurotrophin family of growth factors, which are proteins that support the survival and differentiation of neurons (nerve cells). BDNF is important for the development and function of the nervous system and is involved in a number of important physiological processes, including learning, memory, and the regulation of mood. Dysregulation of BDNF has been linked to a number of neurological and psychiatric disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, depression, and schizophrenia.
